Nesamovyte Lake (Ukraine)

Weather…

Nesamovyte Lake is one of the highest alpine lakes in Ukraine, set at an elevation of 1750 meters within the Chornohora range of the Carpathian Mountains. This glacial lake is located in a deep rocky basin beneath the slopes of Mount Turkul. Spanning approximately 88 meters in length and 45 meters in width, it is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of only 1.5 meters, leading it to freeze entirely during the winter. Its name, which translates to 'frenzied' or 'raging,' alludes to the sudden and unpredictable weather changes and severe storms that frequently occur in this high-altitude area. Local Hutsul folklore is filled with legends about the lake, including the belief that throwing stones into its waters will provoke spirits to unleash devastating hailstorms upon the valley. Despite these myths, Nesamovyte remains a favorite resting spot for trekkers traversing the main Chornohora ridge trail between Hoverla and Pip Ivan. Conservation rules are in place to protect its fragile environment from the impacts of increasing tourism.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Commonly reached via the trail from the Zaroslyak sports base near Vorokhta. This well-known route leads hikers through the Chornohora range toward the high glacial cirque where the lake lies.
📅
Best season
The lake is best visited in summer when it is clear of ice, usually from late June to early September. In winter, the path is avalanche-prone and the lake is completely hidden under thick snow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trail involves a moderate ascent through spruce forests and alpine meadows. The final approach to the glacial cirque is rocky but manageable for most visitors following the main path.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking shoes are highly recommended as the area around the lake can be boggy even in dry weather. Bring warm layers, as temperatures are significantly lower at this altitude.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking is available at the Zaroslyak base, though it can get crowded during weekends and holidays. A small fee is often charged for entry into the national park area by vehicle.
⚠️
Safety
Do not swim in the lake, both to protect its fragile ecosystem and due to local beliefs. Weather at the lake can turn cold and foggy very quickly, so be prepared with navigation tools.
⏱️
Time needed
A round trip from Zaroslyak typically takes about 5 to 7 hours of hiking. This allows enough time to reach the lake, explore the surrounding cirque, and return before late afternoon.
