Mount Hrytsia (Grytsya) is a significant peak within the Skole Beskids range, part of the Outer Eastern Carpathians in western Ukraine. Reaching an elevation of approximately 1089 meters above sea level, it stands as a prominent feature in the Lviv Oblast landscape. The mountain's geology is characterized by Carpathian flysch, consisting of rhythmic layers of sandstone and shale deposited during the Paleogene period. Its slopes are heavily forested with primeval beech and fir trees, which are core components of the regional ecosystem. Historically, the area was vital for the local timber industry, but since the establishment of the Skole Beskids National Nature Park in 1999, the focus has shifted toward environmental protection and tourism. The mountain provides a critical sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including brown bears and various rare bird species. Mount Hrytsia is a popular destination for hikers, offering panoramic views of the Opir River valley and the surrounding forested ridges.

Getting there

Access is often via hiking trails from villages like Kvasy or Bystrytsia. The peak is situated deep within the Chornohora massif and is frequently part of multi-day ridge treks through the High Carpathians.

The convenient time for a tour is from June to September. In high elevations, snow can linger well into June, and the first frosts are not uncommon as early as September in this mountain range.

Terrain & paths

This is alpine terrain with steep climbs, rocky sections, and vast mountain meadows. The paths are often stony and require endurance as well as navigational skills in the high-altitude zone.

What to bring

Weatherproof layered clothing, stable footwear, and a full mountain kit are necessary. Those planning multi-day treks must carry a tent, sleeping bag, and sufficient food supplies for the duration.

Parking spaces are available in the respective starting villages like Kvasy. Since many hikers perform point-to-point treks, it is recommended to plan arrival via public transport like the train.

Safety

Weather on the main Chornohora ridge can change extremely quickly. In fog, orientation becomes difficult; you must stay on marked trails and use GPS for safety in the high alpine environment.

An ascent as a day trip is very demanding, taking 10 to 12 hours. Most visitors reach the summit as part of a 2 to 3-day trek covering the entire mountain ridge of the Chornohora range.
