Sambir is a pretty historic city in the Lviv Oblast, located along the upper reaches of the Dniester River. Its origins date back to 1241, established after the original settlement (Old Sambir) was razed by Mongol forces. Granted Magdeburg city rights in 1390, Sambir flourished as a vital commercial hub on the salt trade routes across Galicia. The city is uniquely famous for housing the relics of Saint Valentine in the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary since 1759, earning it a reputation as a destination for pilgrims and couples. The central Market Square is anchored by a striking 17th-century Renaissance-style City Hall, featuring a prominent 40-meter clock tower. For centuries, Sambir was a distinguished educational and handicraft center within the Austrian and Polish empires. Today, it serves as a regional administrative and industrial hub, with sectors in woodworking, food processing, and machinery. Its well-preserved architecture and lively religious traditions make it a significant cultural gem in western Ukraine and a key transit point toward the Carpathian Mountains.
