Zhovti Vody is a prominent industrial city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of central Ukraine, situated along the banks of the Zhovta River. The location is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Zhovti Vody in 1648, where the Zaporozhian Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnytsky achieved their first major victory against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This triumph marked the beginning of the Khmelnytsky Uprising and remains a cornerstone of Ukrainian national history. The city's modern development began in the late 19th century with the discovery of iron ore and uranium deposits, leading to the establishment of a mining settlement in 1895. In 1957, Zhovti Vody was officially granted city status and evolved into a vital hub for the Soviet nuclear industry. Today, it houses the Vostochny Mining and Processing Plant, which is one of Europe's largest producers of uranium concentrate. The urban landscape features numerous monuments dedicated to the historic 17th-century battle and the region's industrial heritage. The city continues to play a strategic role in Ukraine's energy sector due to its natural resource processing capabilities.
