Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in the Ivano-Frankivsk region is one of Ukraine's most powerful energy facilities and plays a central role in electricity exports to Europe. Built between 1962 and 1969, the plant consists of 12 power units with a total installed capacity of 2,334 megawatts. A unique technical feature was its long-standing operation as the 'Burshtyn Island,' decoupled from the main Ukrainian grid and synchronized with the European ENTSO-E network. The facility is primarily fueled by coal from the Lviv-Volyn basin and supplies not only Western Ukraine but has historically delivered power to Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. The plant's monumental chimney reaches a height of 250 meters, defining the industrial skyline of the region. Despite ecological challenges, the power plant remains an essential component of national energy security and cross-border electricity infrastructure.
