The Hryshko National Botanical Garden in Kyiv was established in 1935 and is part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Located on the historic Vydubychi hills, it has spectacular views of the Dnieper River and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Spanning about 130 hectares, the garden features thematic sections that recreate the flora of various geographic zones, such as the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Far East. The garden is especially famous for its Syringarium, a lilac collection featuring over 1,500 shrubs that attract thousands of visitors every May. Getting there
The garden is located in the Pechersk district of Kyiv and is best reached by metro to Zvirynetska station. From there, bus line 62 or trolleybus 14 lead directly to the main entrance for visitors.
Best season
May is the most spectacular time for a visit, when the famous lilac collection is in full bloom. Spring for magnolias and winter for the greenhouse complexes are also very worthwhile periods for a peaceful visit.
Terrain & paths
The extensive grounds span steep hills on the banks of the Dnieper River with significant elevation changes. Most main paths are paved, but comfortable walking shoes are essential for covering the long distances.
What to bring
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a bottle of water, as the garden is very large. A camera is a must, especially at the viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the Dnieper River and the historic monasteries.
Parking
Parking options near the main entrance are very limited and often crowded. It is highly recommended to use public transport or a taxi to avoid the difficult search for a parking spot in the Pechersk district.
Safety
In case of air raid alerts, follow the staff's instructions and head to the nearest shelter. Stay on the paths and avoid picking any plants to protect the precious botanical collection for all future visitors.
Time needed
A visit usually lasts at least 3 to 4 hours but can easily be extended to a full day. The sheer size of the garden invites visitors to linger and enjoy extensive discovery tours through various plant collections.
