Boim Chapel (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Boim Chapel in Lviv is an outstanding monument of late Renaissance and Mannerist architecture, constructed between 1609 and 1617. It was built as a funerary chapel for the wealthy Boim merchant family, who were of Hungarian origin. The western facade is entirely covered with intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ and the figures of Saints Peter and Paul. A unique feature is the 'Seated Christ' statue atop the dome, a rare iconographic depiction of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The interior is equally ornate, with lavish stucco and sandstone reliefs that narrate biblical history with great detail. Located adjacent to the Latin Cathedral, it is considered one of the best-preserved examples of bourgeois funerary architecture in Eastern Europe. Since 1969, the chapel has been part of the Lviv National Art Gallery and is open to the public as a museum.
