Stare Selo Castle in the Lviv Oblast is one of the largest fortifications in Ukraine, covering an area of nearly two hectares. It was originally built between 1584 and 1589 by Prince Konstanty Vasyl Ostrogski but was destroyed shortly thereafter. The current monumental structure dates back to a large-scale reconstruction by Wladyslaw Dominik Ostrogski between 1642 and 1654. The fortress is shaped like an irregular pentagon with walls reaching up to 16 meters in height, decorated with ornate attics. Three of the original six massive towers remain standing today. Despite its strength, the castle was neglected in the 18th century and used as a brewery and warehouse. Today, the complex impresses with its sheer size and the artistic stonework on the wall crests, although it is in a ruinous state and awaits comprehensive restoration.
