Rivne is the administrative center of the Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine, situated on the banks of the Ustya River. The city was first mentioned in historical records in 1283 as part of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia and has a complex history under Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian rule. In the 19th century, Rivne grew into a significant trade and transportation hub following its connection to the regional railway network. During World War II, the city gained notoriety as the administrative center of the Reichskommissariat Ukraine under Nazi occupation. In the post-war era, Rivne evolved into a major industrial city with a focus on chemical production and machine building. Today, it serves as a vital educational and cultural center, home to several universities and the unique Amber Museum. The city's architecture is a mix of historic religious sites, such as the Resurrection Cathedral, and functional modern urban developments.
