Zhovkva Castle is a significant fortification and residence in the Lviv Oblast, built between 1594 and 1606 for the commander Stanisław Żółkiewski. Designed by architect Paweł Szczęśliwy, the building combines the features of a fortress with those of an Italian Renaissance palazzo. In the late 17th century, under Polish King Jan III Sobieski, the castle was expanded into a magnificent royal residence, serving as a hub for political life and art in Eastern Europe. During the Great Northern War, the castle served as headquarters for Peter I and Ivan Mazepa, highlighting its strategic importance. The complex features four corner towers, a monumental entrance gate, and a spacious inner courtyard once lined with ornate arcades. Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the history of the town of Zhovkva and the Sobieski dynasty, as ongoing restoration efforts aim to return it to its former splendor.
