Zhovkva, located in the Lviv Oblast, is recognized as one of the preeminent examples of a Renaissance-planned 'Good City' in Eastern Europe. Founded in 1594 by the Polish magnate Stanislaw Zolkiewski, the city was designed by Italian architect Paolo de Ducato based on contemporary Italian architectural theories. Its central layout features a square marketplace flanked by arcaded houses and monumental structures, including Zhovkva Castle and the Collegiate Church of St. Lawrence. During the 17th century, the city served as a residence for King John III Sobieski of Poland, leading to a golden age of arts and culture. Zhovkva was also a significant center for Jewish life, anchored by its impressive fortress-style synagogue completed in 1692. The surviving sections of the city walls and gates emphasize the strategic defensive nature of its original design. Today, the historical center is preserved as a state architectural reserve, maintaining its unique late-Renaissance character.
