Akkerman Fortress (Ukraine)

Weather…

Akkerman Fortress, located in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, is one of the largest and most impressive medieval defensive structures in Ukraine. It was constructed on the site of the ancient Greek city of Tyras along the shores of the Dniester Estuary. The current fortification dates primarily from the 13th to 15th centuries, reflecting the influence of Genoese merchants, Moldavian princes, and Ottoman architects. The massive defensive walls stretch over 2 kilometers in length and reach heights of up to 15 meters. Originally featuring 34 towers, the fortress served as a crucial strategic hub for controlling trade routes in the Black Sea region. In 1484, it was captured by Sultan Bayezid II's Ottoman forces and renamed Akkerman, remaining under Turkish control for over three centuries. The complex is divided into four courtyards, with the inner Citadel being the oldest and most fortified section. Today, it stands as a major historical landmark and host to numerous cultural festivals.
