The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of 84 islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria, Uganda. The largest and most developed island is Buggala, whose main town is Kalangala. These islands are renowned for their lush tropical forests, pristine sandy beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere, making them a popular destination for tourists. Ecologically, the islands are of great importance, hosting a variety of bird species, butterflies, and primates, including an endemic subspecies of the red colobus monkey. The waters around the islands are rich in fish, with Nile perch and tilapia forming the basis of the local fishing industry. Culturally, the islands have a deep connection to the Buganda Kingdom; they are considered the home of some of the most important spirits (Balubaale) of the Baganda people. The largest island, Buggala, is connected to the mainland at Entebbe by a regular ferry service. The main economic activities are fishing, agriculture (particularly oil palm plantations), and the growing tourism sector. However, increasing development poses a challenge to the delicate balance between conservation and economic progress.

Getting there

Access to the main islands is typically via scheduled ferries or smaller boats from Entebbe or Bukakata on the mainland. The journey across Lake Victoria usually has scenic views but depends on daily boat schedules.

The drier months from June to August and December to February are generally preferred for calmer waters and clear skies. Visiting during the rainy seasons can result in rougher boat crossings and disrupted ferry services.

The islands feature a mix of sandy lakefront beaches, dense tropical forests, and small local settlement paths. Walking around generally involves sandy shores and relatively gentle, though sometimes overgrown, dirt tracks.

Swimming in Lake Victoria is generally discouraged due to the risk of bilharzia (schistosomiasis) and occasional hippos or crocodiles. Always rely on experienced boat operators for inter-island travel to ensure safety on the water.
