Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the far northeast of Uganda, bordering Sudan and Kenya. It is often regarded as the country's 'forgotten treasure' because its remoteness prevents mass tourism. Those who make the journey are rewarded with a raw, untouched landscape characterized by rugged mountains and wide valleys. Here, you feel like you are in an Africa of bygone times, far from modern civilization. The wildlife in Kidepo is unique to Uganda. It is the only place in the country where you can see cheetahs and ostriches in the wild. The large herds of buffalo moving through the valley are an impressive sight, as are the lions that often perch on granite outcrops (kopjes). The birdlife is equally diverse with over 475 species, attracting ornithologists from around the globe. In addition to nature, the park gives cultural insights into the lives of the Karamojong and the Ik, two ethnic groups with fascinating traditions. Local gastronomy is rustic, often featuring grilled meats served with millet porridge. The most convenient way to arrive is by domestic flight, as the drive from Kampala can take several days due to challenging road conditions. The best time for a safari is the dry season from September to March. During these months, animals gather around the few remaining water sources, making sightings much easier. While the landscape is dusty and hot, the clarity of the light and the vast horizons make it all worthwhile.
