The Kabaka's Palace, also known as Mengo Palace or Twekobe, is the historic official residence of the Kabaka (King) of Buganda. Located on Mengo Hill in Kampala, this palace holds a complex and often tragic history. Originally built in the late 19th century, the current structure was erected in the early 20th century. The palace gained international notoriety in 1966 when it was attacked by the central government's troops led by Milton Obote, leading to the exile of Kabaka Mutesa II. Following this event, the palace was converted into army barracks. Worse still, during Idi Amin's regime in the 1970s, the palace's cellars were used as infamous torture chambers and prisons. Electrified water trenches and dark cells became the final stop for thousands of victims. Today, the palace is no longer the residence of the reigning Kabaka but serves as a historical landmark. Visitors can tour the grounds and see the chilling underground chambers, which serve as a somber reminder of Uganda's turbulent periods.

Visiting
Kabaka's Palace is partially open to the public, but only through guided tours. You can visit the grand reception rooms, the royal gardens and the notorious underground dungeons.
Typical hours
Guided tours are usually offered multiple times a day, most often in the morning and afternoon. It is advisable to book ahead by phone as times may vary.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the outdoor areas and gardens, but usually prohibited inside the buildings. Your guide will inform you where you can take pictures.
Time needed
Allow about one to one and a half hours for the tour, including the dungeon visit. If you want to explore the gardens on your own, allow extra time.
Combine with
Combine the palace visit with nearby Bulange Mengo, Buganda's parliament, also on Mengo Hill. Together they provide a comprehensive picture of the monarchy.
Getting there
The palace is on Mengo Hill in Kampala, about 10 minutes by taxi from the city centre. You can also take a boda-boda; the entry point is on Lubiri Ring Road.
Insider tip
Ask your guide about stories of the underground dungeons - they are a dark but fascinating part of history. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven.
