Nalubaale Dam (Owen Falls Dam) (Uganda)

Weather…

Nalubaale Dam, originally known as the Owen Falls Dam, is a hydroelectric dam on the White Nile just after it exits Lake Victoria near Jinja, Uganda. It was commissioned in 1954 by Queen Elizabeth II and was a monumental engineering project of the colonial era. The dam replaced Ripon Falls, previously considered the natural source of the Nile, which was submerged by the construction. Its primary function is electricity generation, and the Nalubaale Power Station has an installed capacity of 180 megawatts. For decades, it was the primary source of electricity for Uganda and also exported power to parts of Kenya and Tanzania. The dam also serves as a bridge for road and rail traffic, although most heavy traffic has now been diverted to the newer Source of the Nile Bridge. The dam's construction slightly raised the level of Lake Victoria, creating a regulated reservoir to control the Nile's outflow.
