Bugiri is a strategically important town in eastern Uganda, located along the main transit corridor connecting the capital city, Kampala, to the Kenyan border at Malaba. This location makes the town a vital hub for regional trade and transport services across East Africa. Geographically, the surrounding area is characterized by flat plains and extensive wetlands, which provide good conditions for large-scale rice cultivation. The Kibimba Rice Scheme, now known as Tilda Rice, is one of the largest agricultural ventures in the region and a cornerstone of the local economy. Historically, Bugiri District was carved out of Iganga District in 1997, which elevated the town's status as an administrative center. The local population is predominantly composed of the Basoga and Iteso ethnic groups, creating a diverse cultural environment. In addition to rice, the trade of grains and small-scale livestock farming are significant economic activities. The town serves as a crucial stopover for long-distance truckers heading toward the Indian Ocean ports.
