Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station (Uganda)

Weather…

The Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station is located on the Victoria Nile between the districts of Kayunga and Kamuli. Officially commissioned in March 2019, the facility has an installed capacity of 183 megawatts, playing a key role in stabilizing Uganda's power supply. The project was largely funded by a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China and constructed by the China International Water & Electric Corporation. Beyond electricity generation, the dam serves a vital logistical purpose by featuring a public bridge that connects the Kayunga and Kamuli districts. This bridge has dramatically improved regional trade and movement, replacing the slow ferry services that previously operated on the river. While the project's reservoir submerged some white-water rapids popular with tourists, the economic benefits of increased power output and improved connectivity are substantial. Isimba is a critical asset in Uganda's drive to lower electricity tariffs and promote sustainable industrialization across the central region.
