The Jinja Railway Bridge, officially known as the Owen Falls Extension, is a vital steel truss bridge spanning the White Nile in Jinja, Uganda. Completed in 1931, it was built to complement the older Nalubaale Bridge (formerly Owen Falls Dam) and bolster the Uganda Railway's connection between Kampala and the Kenyan border. With a total length of approximately 260 meters, the bridge played a crucial role in facilitating trade and transport in the region, especially for the export of goods like coffee and cotton. Its construction was a significant engineering feat for its time, symbolizing the growing economic importance of Uganda within the British Empire. Today, although rail transport has seen a decline in prominence relative to road transport, the bridge remains a central component of East Africa's infrastructure. The bridge remains an iconic landmark of Jinja, the 'adventure capital of East Africa'.

Visiting
The Jinja Railway Bridge is an active railway bridge over the Nile, typically not accessible to pedestrians. However, you can view the bridge well from the riverbank and photograph it from there.
Typical hours
Since the bridge is visible from outside at any time, there are no restrictions for viewing. The best time for photos is late afternoon when the light nicely illuminates the steel truss structure.
Photography
Photograph the bridge from the Nile riverbank, preferably from the downstream side. Watch out for railway traffic - a passing train makes a great subject.
Time needed
A visit to the bridge typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including photography and admiring the view. If you walk along the river, it may take a bit longer.

Getting there
The bridge is located in Jinja, about 2 km from the town centre. Best reached by taxi or boda-boda; follow the road along the Nile eastwards.
