Kakira Sugar Works is the largest sugar producer in Uganda and the flagship company of the Madhvani Group. Located approximately 10 kilometers east of Jinja in Mayuge District, the factory was founded in the 1920s. With over 9,000 hectares of its own plantations and a network of thousands of outgrowers, Kakira plays a central role in the country's sugar supply security. The company has evolved into an integrated energy complex, generating electricity from bagasse (sugar cane waste) for the national grid. Additionally, Kakira produces bioethanol and various industrial by-products. As one of Uganda's largest private employers, Kakira provides extensive social services such as schools and hospitals for its staff and the surrounding community. The factory stands as a symbol of long-term entrepreneurial commitment and industrial excellence in East Africa.

What is this place?
Kakira Sugar Works is Uganda's largest sugar producer and a major economic driver for the Jinja region. In addition to sugar production, the plant generates renewable energy from bagasse, powering thousands of households.

Visiting
The factory premises are an active industrial area; guided tours are usually only arranged upon prior request and for groups. From the outside, one can see the vast facilities with tall chimneys and conveyor belts.

Where to view it
From the bridge over the nearby Napoleon River, there is a good view of the entire factory compound. The main road along the sugarcane fields also has impressive views of the green plantations and industrial facilities.

On markets in Jinja, sugar from Kakira and local sweets made from it are sold. Seasonal sugarcane can be bought directly from the fields during harvest time, often peeled and offered as a snack.

The sugarcane harvest runs from May to December, when the mills operate around the clock. During the remaining months, the plant is maintained and the new sugarcane cycle is prepared.
