Rubaga Cathedral (Uganda)

Weather…

Saint Mary's Cathedral, widely known as Rubaga Cathedral, is a magnificent landmark perched atop Rubaga Hill, one of the seven historic hills of Kampala. Construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1925, led by the French Catholic missionaries known as the White Fathers. The cathedral’s grand Romanesque-revival architecture, featuring twin towers and a warm red-brick exterior, makes it one of the most visible and beloved structures in the city. The interior is equally impressive, with intricate stained-glass windows that narrate religious stories and a vast, peaceful sanctuary. The site holds immense historical significance for the Buganda Kingdom; it was once the site of Kabaka Mutesa I’s palace before he moved to Mengo and granted the land to the Catholic missionaries. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Kampala, the cathedral has hosted several Popes and remains a vital spiritual hub for the country’s Catholic population. Visitors are drawn here not only for its religious sanctity and historical depth but also for the tranquil grounds and the wide-open panoramic views it has over the sprawling city of Kampala below.
