Mount Elgon Peaks

Weather…
Water temperature…
The peaks of Mount Elgon are the highest points of a massive extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya. The highest peak on the Ugandan side is Wagagai, at 4,321 meters. Other notable peaks include Sudek, Koitobos, and Mubiyi, all of which form part of the eroded rim of one of the world's largest intact calderas, which has a diameter of approximately 8 kilometers. These peaks are the result of millions of years of volcanic activity followed by erosion that has exposed the harder volcanic plugs. The climate at these altitudes is alpine, characterized by cold temperatures, high UV radiation, and the possibility of frost and even snowfall. The vegetation is unique, comprising an Afro-alpine zone with rare and endemic plants such as giant groundsels (Senecio) and lobelias. The peaks region is a crucial water catchment area, feeding numerous rivers and streams that support life on the lower slopes and surrounding plains. The entire area is protected as Mount Elgon National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
