Namirembe Cathedral (Uganda)

Weather…

St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe, perched atop its namesake hill, stands as the mother church of the Anglican Church of Uganda. Its history is rich, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the country. The current cathedral is the fifth church structure to be built on this site since the first Church Missionary Society missionaries arrived in 1877. Construction of the present massive brick-built edifice began in 1915 and it was consecrated in 1919. Its architecture is a blend of European cathedral design and local materials, notably the over one million locally burnt bricks. Inside, it houses an impressive organ and beautiful stained-glass windows. Namirembe, meaning 'Mother of Peace,' holds immense historical significance, having been a witness to many key religious and political events in Buganda's and Uganda's history. The cathedral holds the remains of Bishop James Hannington, who was martyred in 1885, and Kabaka Muteesa I, who invited the first missionaries.
