Pagala lies in Blitta Prefecture within the Centrale Region, about 250 kilometres north of Lomé. The town sits in a fertile valley fed by numerous small watercourses, which allows extensive rice cultivation - a real exception in this otherwise rather dry region. Pagala is an important hub for rice and palm-oil processing, with small mills and cooperatives operating throughout the area. Maize, cassava, yams and bananas are also grown. The town once boasted a major station on the Lomé-Blitta railway, and remnants of the old infrastructure can still be seen. Pagala also has religious significance as the home of a well-known Catholic pilgrimage site, whose annual gatherings draw the faithful from across Togo. The population is mostly Tem, supplemented by migrants from the north who have settled in the area in search of fertile land.
