Fazao-Malfakassa National Park (Togo)

Weather…

Fazao-Malfakassa National Park is the largest protected area in Togo, spanning approximately 1,920 square kilometers in the central part of the country. Established in 1975 by merging two existing forest reserves, it encompasses the Fazao Mountains and the Malfakassa Plateau. The park's landscape is a rugged mosaic of semi-deciduous forests, gallery forests along watercourses, and wooded savannas. Its dramatic topography features steep cliffs and deep valleys, providing a unique environment for West African wildlife. The park serves as one of the final refuges for Togo's remaining elephant population, as well as chimpanzees, bongos, and over 200 species of birds. Geologically, the area is part of the Atakora range, characterized by ancient rock formations and numerous seasonal waterfalls. Despite its ecological significance, the park faces ongoing challenges from poaching and illegal logging. However, it remains a critical site for biodiversity conservation and a destination for eco-tourists seeking unspoiled African wilderness.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the park typically involves driving from the nearby city of Sokodé. The main entrance areas usually require a 4x4 vehicle due to the rugged and unpaved nature of the rural access roads.
📅
Best season
The dry season, roughly stretching from November to March, is the well-suited time to visit, as the unpaved roads are far more passable and the diverse wildlife tends to gather around the remaining water sources.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The park is characterized by challenging forested mountains, deep valleys, and thick savanna. Hiking trails are mostly informal and often require navigation skills, making a local guide extremely beneficial.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, worn-in hiking boots are an absolute necessity for the mountainous terrain. Also pack plenty of drinking water, reliable insect repellent, and long, lightweight clothing to protect against dense brush.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors generally leave their vehicles at the designated park headquarters or the main entry gates. From there, most further exploration is typically conducted on foot or via specialized official park vehicles.
⚠️
Safety
Always hire an official guide when exploring the forested mountains to avoid getting lost. Be mindful of wild animals and strictly follow all instructions provided by the national park authorities.
⏱️
Time needed
A proper visit generally requires at least a full day to explore a fraction of the forested mountains. Many dedicated nature enthusiasts opt for multi-day trips if basic local accommodations are available.
