Tchamba is the capital of the eponymous prefecture in the Centrale Region and lies about 50 kilometres east of Sokodé, close to the Beninese border. The town is the cultural heart of the Tchamba people, known for their traditional spirit-medicine and for the celebrated 'Tchamba Voodoo' tradition - a form of spirit veneration that keeps alive the memory of enslaved ancestors. Economically, Tchamba depends heavily on agriculture: rice, yams, maize, sorghum and cotton dominate the fertile plains, and the area ranks among Togo's largest rice-growing districts. The Wednesday market attracts buyers from Benin and across the Centrale Region. In recent years Tchamba has also gained a reputation as a hub for cashew nut processing. Architecturally, the surrounding villages are notable for their round mud houses topped with conical thatched roofs, a vivid testimony to the local building tradition.
