Blitta lies in the southern part of the Centrale Region, about 270 kilometres north of Lomé, and is the capital of Blitta Prefecture. For decades Blitta was the terminus of Togo's central railway line, which since German colonial times had linked the coast with the hinterland, turning the town into a major transhipment point for timber, maize, cassava and cotton. The railway is now largely dormant, but Blitta remains a key truck stop along National Road 1 and hosts numerous warehouses and processing units. A notable feature is the nearby Sokoé solar power plant, one of West Africa's largest photovoltaic projects, which is driving Togo's energy transition. The population is composed mainly of Anlo, Adèle and Tem peoples. The surrounding countryside still holds forest and gallery formations rich in wildlife such as antelopes and monkeys, and small nature reserves are gradually being developed.
