Aileu is the administrative capital of the Aileu municipality, located in the cool highlands south of the national capital, Dili. Due to its strategic mountain location, Aileu served as a key administrative and training center for the Portuguese colonial government. During World War II, the town was briefly used as a base for Allied forces before falling under Japanese occupation. The region's temperate climate is a stark contrast to the tropical heat of the coast, enabling a diverse agricultural output that includes vegetables, maize, and coffee. Aileu played a pivotal role in the history of the independence struggle, acting as a political hub for organizing the national liberation movement. The town is positioned within a wide-open mountain landscape that has many opportunities for hiking and nature observation. Today, Aileu is home to several important educational institutions and is known for its peaceful atmosphere and hospitable community. The architecture of the town presents a mix of traditional Timorese structures and modern administrative buildings.
