Pope John Paul II Monument
The Pope John Paul II Monument is located in Tasi Tolu, west of Dili, and commemorates the historic visit of the Pontiff on October 12, 1989. This visit was a turning point in East Timor's history, as it drew global attention to the suffering of the population under Indonesian occupation. The statue stands approximately six meters tall on a hilltop overlooking the site where the Pope celebrated Mass before over 100,000 people. The statue's gesture with outstretched arms symbolizes peace and blessing for the young nation. The monument was erected after independence to honor the moral support provided by the Vatican during the struggle for freedom. The site includes extensive stairs and a plaza often used for religious ceremonies and commemorative events. From here, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the coastline and the salt lakes of Tasi Tolu.
