Tajik National Park, also known as Pamir National Park, spans over 2.5 million hectares, covering nearly 18 percent of Tajikistan's total land area. It is located in the center of the Pamir Mountains, one of the highest mountain systems in the world. The park is home to the Fedchenko Glacier, the longest glacier outside the polar regions, as well as Sarez Lake and Karakul Lake. The landscape is characterized by snow-capped peaks exceeding 7,000 meters, deep gorges, and barren high-altitude deserts. In 2013, the park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its significant biodiversity, providing critical habitats for rare species such as the snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, and Siberian ibex. Due to the extreme altitude and harsh climate, the park is virtually uninhabited, which has helped preserve its pristine wilderness. It is a premier destination for extreme mountaineers and scientists studying the impacts of climate change on alpine ecosystems.
