Shugnan Range

The Shugnan Range is a prominent mountain chain in the western Pamir of Tajikistan, running south of the Gunt River and dominating the Shugnan region. It extends approximately 80 kilometers and reaches its highest elevation at Pik Skalisty (Shugnan) at 5,707 meters. The relief is characterized by rugged peaks and steep slopes that often drop almost vertically into the deep river valleys. Geologically, the range consists predominantly of granite and metamorphic rocks that show high resistance to erosion. The climate is extremely dry and continental, resulting in a barren yet fascinating high-altitude landscape. Historically, the Shugnan Range was a core area of Shugnan culture, whose language and traditions remain lively in the mountain villages today. Its strategic location above the city of Khorog made the mountains an important observation point for regional rulers. Today, the range is a significant area for local livestock farming and is increasingly important for adventure tourism.
