Ishkoshim lies in the Pamirs at the western entrance of the Wakhan Corridor, in one of Central Asia’s most spectacular settings: one bank of the Panj River is Tajik territory, the other holds the namesake Afghan village, beyond which the icy giants of the Hindu Kush soar into the sky. The small town of around 4,000 is the administrative centre of the eponymous district and the main supply point for the entry into the Wakhan Corridor, the narrow finger of Afghanistan that reaches all the way to China. Ishkoshim is known for its former Saturday cross-border market, where Tajik and Afghan traders used to mingle. Tourists come for the Bibi Fatima hot springs, the ancient Kushan-era Kaakha fortress, and the Hazrat-i Maulana shrine. The Pamiri population is predominantly Ismaili and speaks Shughni and Wakhi.
