Akademiya Nauk Range (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Akademiya Nauk Range is a major mountain range in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, stretching approximately 110 kilometers from north to south. It serves as the vertical axis of the Western Pamir and contains the highest peak in Tajikistan, Ismoil Somoni Peak, which stands at 7,495 meters above sea level. Named in 1927 after the Soviet Academy of Sciences, the range was accurately mapped during scientific expeditions that revealed its immense scale. The range features an exceptionally high average elevation, with 24 peaks rising above 6,000 meters. Extensive glaciation covers much of the terrain, most notably the Fedchenko Glacier, which is one of the longest mountain glaciers outside the polar circles. Geologically, the range is composed of crystalline schists, granites, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, formed during ancient tectonic shifts. The area remains a focal point for international mountaineering and glaciological research due to its pristine environment and the climate records preserved within its massive ice fields.
