Gunt River (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Gunt River is a major waterway in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of eastern Tajikistan. Originating in the high-altitude plateaus of the eastern Pamirs, the river flows westward for approximately 296 kilometers before joining the Pyanj River in the city of Khorog. The Gunt Valley is of central importance for travel, as a significant portion of the Pamir Highway (M41) runs directly alongside the river. Along its course, the Gunt flows through the high-altitude Lake Yashilkul, a significant natural reservoir. The river is crucial for the regional energy supply, with the Pamir-1 hydroelectric plant near Khorog providing the majority of electricity for the provincial capital and surrounding areas. The landscape surrounding the Gunt is characterized by sharp contrasts between arid mountain deserts, lush irrigated oases, and towering peaks that often exceed 5,000 meters.

🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, layered outdoor clothing, and sun protection are essential. Always carry sufficient water and high-energy snacks.
