Vrang (Tajikistan)

Weather…

Vrang is one of the most culturally fascinating villages in the Tajik Wakhan Valley. It owes its importance primarily to an archaeological monument that is unusual for this now predominantly Muslim region: a three-tiered Buddhist stupa. This structure is estimated to date from the 4th to 6th centuries and bears witness to the time when Buddhism traveled along the Silk Road from India to Central Asia and China. The stupa perches on a hill above the village and gives a wide view across the valley into Afghanistan. Next to the stupa, there are man-made caves in the surrounding rocks that were likely once used by monks as meditation rooms or dwellings. The climb to the stupa is short but leads through authentic village life, where you can watch children playing and farmers at work. Vrang is also a center for traditional Pamiri weaving. Visitors can often purchase handmade socks and hats decorated with the typical geometric patterns of the region. The best time to visit is summer, when the fields around the village are lush green. It is a place of silence and reflection that perfectly reflects Tajikistan's multi-layered religious history.
