Nanhushan is the highest peak in the northern section of the Central Mountain Range, reaching an elevation of 3,742 meters. It is widely regarded as one of Taiwan's most majestic mountains, often earned the title 'King of the North Section.' Geologically, Nanhushan is of paramount importance as it contains the island's best-preserved glacial landforms, including two large cirques created during the last glacial period. The mountain is primarily composed of slate and quartzite, giving it a rugged and fractured appearance. Due to its isolation and extreme high-altitude climate, it hosts a unique array of alpine flora, including the endemic Nanhushan Edelweiss. The massif is part of Taroko National Park and has a challenging environment for mountaineers, while serving as a natural laboratory for studying Taiwan's Pleistocene history and alpine biodiversity.

Getting there
The main access to the mountain massif is generally via the well-known Siyuan Pass (Siyuan Yakou). From there, a multi-day, demanding trek begins through the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan.
Best season
The preferred seasons for an ascent are autumn and early spring when the weather is generally more stable. During the winter months, hikers must frequently expect ice and snow at higher elevations.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by extremely rugged, craggy trails and steep scree slopes. The route passes through dense forests, along narrow mountain ridges, and requires scrambling with hands in some sections.
What to bring
A sturdy trekking backpack, high-quality mountain boots, and weather-proof clothing are absolutely necessary. Sufficient water, provisions, and crampons during the colder months should also be brought along.
Parking
Parking options are mostly available on the pass road near the starting point at the Siyuan Pass. It is advisable to arrive early as the parking spots along the road can often be quite limited in number.
Safety
The rugged terrain and rapid weather changes pose the biggest challenges, making good physical fitness important. In certain sections, steep drop-offs require extra caution and very sure-footedness.
Time needed
The entire expedition to the summit and back generally takes about four to five days to complete. Overnight stays are typically arranged in the designated mountain cabins situated along the trail.
