Smangus
Smangus is one of Taiwan's most isolated destinations, earning its nickname 'God's Village'. This Atayal tribal settlement was the last in Taiwan to be reached by road and electricity, a delay that helped preserve its unique traditions and pristine environment. Today, it is famous for its cooperative social system, where resources and labor are shared. The main attraction is the trail leading to the 'Yaya Qparung' ancient forest, which features massive red cypress trees estimated to be over 2,000 years old. The hike to the ancient giants takes about four to five hours round-trip, winding through bamboo groves and lush wilderness. Along the way, hikers experience the profound silence of the mountains and tribal hospitality. The village architecture utilizes natural timber and stone, reflecting a deep respect for the land. Local cuisine highlights indigenous ingredients like millet, wild mountain pepper (magao), and locally sourced meats. Getting to Smangus is an adventure, requiring a long drive on winding mountain roads from Hsinchu. Due to its popularity and limited space, visitor permits or prior bookings are often required. The best times to visit are during the spring cherry blossom season or the clear, cool days of autumn. Smangus provides a rare glimpse into a communal way of life existing in harmony with the ancient forest.
