Valère Basilica
The Valère Basilica perches atop one of the two hills that dominate the cityscape of Sion in the Canton of Valais. This fortified church, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, is an outstanding example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Originally, it served as the residence for the canons of the Sion cathedral chapter. The complex is surrounded by a defensive curtain wall that protected the religious site from attacks. The basilica is world-famous for its 'swallow's nest' organ, built around 1435, which is considered the oldest playable organ in the world. The church's interior impresses with artistic capitals and murals reflecting the spiritual power of the Prince-Bishopric of Sion. Valère is not only a place of worship but also the seat of the Valais History Museum, which presents archaeological finds from the region. The harmonious integration of architecture into the rugged rocky landscape makes Valère a landmark of Western Switzerland.
