Conthey is located in the center of the canton of Valais, on the right bank of the Rhone and immediately west of the cantonal capital, Sion. The municipality is characterized by enormous geographical diversity, stretching from the Rhone plain across steep vineyard terraces up to the high alpine regions of the Bernese Alps. A significant part of the local economy is based on viticulture; Conthey is one of the largest wine producers in the canton, with varieties such as Fendant and Pinot Noir dominating. In the plain, one of the largest commercial and shopping zones in Valais has also developed, possessing a supra-regional appeal. For nature lovers, Conthey is the starting point for the wild Derborence valley, which was formed by gigantic landslides in the 18th century and is now a nature reserve of national importance. The municipality's historic buildings include easy on the eye hamlets and the church of Plan-Conthey, visible from afar. The climate is mild and dry, favoring both agriculture and tourism. The infrastructure is excellently developed, with schools, cultural centers, and very good access to the A9 motorway. The community cultivates its traditions with wine festivals and cultural events that attract visitors from all over the canton. The architecture ranges from traditional Valais stone houses to modern commercial buildings in the plain.
