Bulle is the capital of the Gruyère district in the canton of Fribourg and serves as the economic hub of the region. Situated on a plateau at the foot of the Moléson mountain range, the town has a long-standing tradition as a major marketplace for regional livestock and alpine agriculture. A central landmark is the Castle of Bulle, erected in the 13th century by the Bishops of Lausanne, which is now protected as a monument of national significance. The historic old town was almost entirely rebuilt in a Neoclassical style following a devastating fire in 1805, giving the urban landscape a unique architectural cohesion. Today, Bulle blends its rich heritage in cheese production and timber trade with modern industries, particularly in biotechnology and food processing. As the gateway to the Fribourg Prealps, the municipality also plays a vital role in regional tourism and acts as a strategic transport node between Fribourg and the Lake Geneva basin.
