Sierre, called Siders in German, is located in the Rhone Valley at the border between Upper and Lower Valais. Thanks to its mild climate and over 300 days of sunshine per year, it is often referred to as the Cité du Soleil (City of the Sun). The town is an important economic center and the largest wine-growing location in the canton, surrounded by extensive vineyard terraces that define the landscape. A striking feature is its bilingualism, as both French and German are spoken here. Culturally, Sierre is closely associated with the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who spent his final years at the nearby Château de Muzot. The Maison de la Cour de Sierre now houses a museum dedicated to viticulture and local traditions. Lac de Géronde, a small swimming lake on the outskirts of town, is a popular meeting spot for those seeking relaxation and swimmers. The town's topography is characterized by prominent hills formed by a post-glacial landslide. Sierre also serves as a convenient starting point for excursions into the surrounding side valleys such as Val d'Anniviers or to the Crans-Montana plateau. The modern architecture of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland adds contemporary accents to the historic urban fabric. Every year, the Sierre Blues Festival takes place here, attracting international artists and turning the town into a lively stage.
