Savièse extends across a broad plateau on the right side of the Rhone Valley, just north of the cantonal capital, Sion. The municipality comprises several villages, such as St-Germain, Chandolin, and Granois, all harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Savièse is one of the most significant wine-growing regions in Valais, with vines climbing spectacular terraces to high altitudes. The town is also famous for the 'Savièse School', an artist colony around 1900 shaped by painters like Ernest Biéler, who focused on portraying rural life. Traditions are deeply cherished here, evident in the magnificent traditional costumes and regular village festivals. The 'bisses' are unique historical irrigation channels that guide meltwater from glaciers to fields and vineyards; the Bisse de Torrent-Neuf is now a spectacular hiking trail. The architecture blends old Valais wooden houses with modern villas, as Savièse's views and sunshine have made it a highly sought-after residential area. Culturally, the Maison de la Culture in St-Germain hosts various exhibitions. The geographical location provides direct access to Alpine landscapes and hiking routes toward the Sanetsch Pass. Despite its proximity to urban Sion, Savièse has maintained its independent village character and pride in its local identity. Alongside viticulture, the economy is increasingly driven by the service sector.
