Carouge is an independent municipality in the canton of Geneva, currently forming a seamless urban unit with the city of Geneva. Its history is remarkable, as it was constructed in the 18th century by the Kings of Sardinia as a planned good city, designed to compete with Calvinist Geneva. The Piedmontese influence remains evident today in its regular, grid-like street layout and Mediterranean-style architecture featuring inner courtyards and gardens. It was not until 1816 that the city was ceded to the canton of Geneva and Switzerland under the Treaty of Turin. Nowadays, Carouge is known as the "Bohemian quarter" of the region, celebrated for its lively cultural life, numerous artisan workshops, boutiques, and markets. The Neoclassical buildings and lively squares provide the town with a charm that distinguishes it from downtown Geneva. Carouge is not just a residential area but a significant center for small businesses and design, proudly maintaining its Sardinian roots.
