Valangin Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Valangin Castle is located in a strategically vital narrow pass in the Val-de-Ruz within the Canton of Neuchâtel. The medieval fortress was founded in the 12th century by the Lords of Valangin to control the trade route between Lake Neuchâtel and the Jura valleys. The centerpiece of the complex is the massive, square residential tower, surrounded by an impressive curtain wall featuring six circular towers. The architecture demonstrates the transition from a purely military fortification to a late Gothic aristocratic residence. For centuries, Valangin was the center of an independent lordship before falling under the direct control of the Counts of Neuchâtel in the 16th century. Since 1894, the castle has housed a museum documenting the regional history of the valley and the lifestyle of the local nobility. The well-preserved interiors, with their heavy beamed ceilings and historical furniture, convey an authentic atmosphere of the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
