Weather…

The La Sauge nature center is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel and is an essential part of the Grande Cariçaie reserve. The area covers approximately 41 hectares and serves as a critical habitat for numerous migratory birds and native species. Visitors can explore the wildlife from specialized observation hides strategically placed along the ponds and canals. The center is operated by BirdLife Switzerland and has provided extensive information on regional biodiversity since its opening in 2001. The landscape is defined by reed beds, fens, and alluvial forests typical of the lakeshore region. Geographically, La Sauge is situated at the mouth of the Broye Canal, a waterway connecting Lake Murten with Lake Neuchâtel.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The lake area is best reached via the BirdLife Nature Centre in Cudrefin. PostBuses run regularly from Ins railway station, and in summer, excursion boats stop directly at the nearby La Sauge landing stage.
📅
Best season
The main visiting period is between March and October, when the nature centre is open. Spring and autumn offer the best opportunities to observe rare migratory birds in the extensive lakeside wetlands.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is largely flat, consisting of well-maintained paths and wooden observation hides. The nature trail is wheelchair accessible and leads safely through the sensitive reed beds and marshy areas.
🎒
What to bring
Good binoculars are essential for birdwatching to avoid disturbing the wildlife. Wear weatherproof clothing and comfortable walking shoes, as the climate on the lakeshore can often be windy and changeable.
🅿️
Parking
Paid parking spaces are available directly at the nature centre and the adjacent restaurant. As capacity is limited, arriving by public transport is highly recommended during busy weekends and holidays.
⚠️
Safety
Please stay strictly on the marked paths and within the observation hides to protect nesting birds. Dogs must generally be kept on a leash and are not permitted to enter certain restricted nature zones.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan approximately 2 to 3 hours for visiting the nature centre and the main trail. If you wish to explore the surrounding shores of the Grande Cariçaie, consider spending a half or full day in the area.
