Neuchâtel Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Neuchâtel Castle looms imposingly on a rocky outcrop above the old town and Lake Neuchâtel. Its origins trace back to the 10th century, when Rudolf III of Burgundy ordered a residence to be built on this site. Over the centuries, the complex was continuously expanded and today reflects a harmonious blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. The Romanesque western facade from the 12th century is particularly impressive, featuring richly decorated windows and capitals. For centuries, the castle was the seat of the Counts and later the Princes of Neuchâtel, including the Kings of Prussia, who were formally the sovereigns of the territory until 1848. Today, the castle is not only a historical monument but also serves as the seat of the cantonal government and administration. Visitors can tour the grand halls, the cloister, and the adjacent collegiate church, which together form one of Western Switzerland's most significant architectural ensembles.
