Frauenfeld is the capital of the Canton of Thurgau, idyllically situated on the river Murg in northeastern Switzerland. The historical center is dominated by the imposing Frauenfeld Castle, whose distinctive residential tower dates back to around 1227 and now houses the cantonal History Museum. The city gained special political significance as a regular meeting place for the Swiss Federal Diet (Tagsatzung) between 1712 and 1798. The architecture of the Old Town reflects the Baroque prosperity of this era, featuring grand facades and well-preserved patrician houses. Frauenfeld is also a significant industrial hub, particularly in the fields of mechanical engineering and food processing. Cultural highlights include the annual 'Openair Frauenfeld', one of Europe's largest hip-hop festivals, and the Große Allmend horse racing track. The surrounding area, with its rolling hills and vineyards, features numerous opportunities for hiking and cycling in the rural Thurgau countryside.
