💡 Tips
- Stay more than one night to benefit from the guest card, which in summer often includes free use of all mountain railways and public transport in the Upper Engadin.
- Visit the Val Roseg. A horse-drawn carriage ride into this car-free valley is an unforgettable, peaceful experience.
- The Morteratsch glacier trail is an easy educational path that impressively documents the glacier's retreat.
- In late spring (May/June), the ibexes come down to the edge of the village to feed. Look for them on the slopes above the church.
🍽 Food
A must-try when in the Engadin. Buy it from one of the renowned local confectioneries for the most authentic taste.
This type of buckwheat spätzle is a hearty, traditional dish. Look for it in a restaurant serving Graubünden specialities.
After a long day in the mountains, enjoy a classic Swiss cheese fondue in one of the cozy, pine-wood-paneled dining rooms.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The main street of Pontresina provides a mix of sports shops, boutiques, and stores selling local products.
Look for small items decorated with sgraffito patterns, the traditional incised plasterwork technique seen on many Engadin houses.
Hike into this quiet, car-free side valley. There's a restaurant at the end where you can often spot chamois and marmots.
An idyllic forest lake between Pontresina and St. Moritz. Excellent for a quiet walk or a refreshing swim in summer.
Take the funicular up and enjoy the silence and the panoramic view of the entire Engadin lake plateau, especially at sunset.
Water temperature…
Pontresina is an elegant mountain village in the Upper Engadin, surrounded by larch forests and the dramatic peaks of the Bernina Range. Unlike its neighbor St. Moritz, Pontresina maintains a more tranquil atmosphere, defined by its historic Engadin houses and magnificent Belle Époque architecture. It is a gateway to the Val Roseg, a car-free valley well-suited for horse-drawn carriage rides, and the impressive Morteratsch Glacier. The area is home to the Alps' largest ibex colony, often seen near the Languard chairlift. In winter, the village is a hub for cross-country skiing and provides easy access to the Diavolezza glacier slopes. Visitors must try the famous Engadin nut cake (Tuorta da nusch) in one of the local pastry shops.
