💡 Tips
- Many hotels offer the "Mountain railways included" card for stays of two nights or more, giving you free use of most lifts and public transport in summer.
- The Maloja wind is a reliable afternoon wind on the lakes. Convenient for sailing or kitesurfing, but lakeside hikers should pack a windproof jacket.
- Take a trip on the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage line. In summer, there are open-air observation cars for even better photos of glaciers and mountains.
- Pay attention to the local language, Romansh. A friendly "Allegra" (hello) is much appreciated, especially in the villages of the Lower Engadin.
- In autumn, the larch forests turn golden yellow. For many, this is the most beautiful time for hiking and photography, often with more stable weather than in high summer.
🍽 Food
This rich walnut and caramel tart is the most famous culinary souvenir. Buy it from a local bakery (Konditorei), where it's often made using a traditional family recipe.
Chard rolls stuffed with spätzle dough and cured meat. Look for a traditional restaurant serving "Bündner Spezialitäten" (Grisons specialities) to try this hearty dish.
Buckwheat dumplings, often served with vegetables and cheese. A simple but delicious dish you can find in many mountain huts and rustic inns throughout the valley.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
This is the most famous luxury shopping street in the Alps. Even if you're not buying, it's an experience to window-shop the top international brands.
Look out for small "Hofladen" signs in the countryside. Here you can buy authentic Engadin mountain cheese, cured sausage, or honey directly from the producer.
In the villages of the Lower Engadin, like Guarda or Scuol, you can find small shops selling pottery or textiles decorated with the traditional sgraffito patterns seen on the house facades.
A walk or bike ride along the lakes from Maloja to St. Moritz features sweeping views. The section around Lake Sils is especially tranquil.
This car-free side valley near Pontresina is well-suited for a gentle hike or a horse-drawn carriage ride. A restaurant with a famous dessert buffet awaits at the end.
Take the funicular up and enjoy the panoramic view of the entire valley. There are easy walking paths along the mountain ridge.

The Engadin is one of Europe's highest inhabited valleys, stretching 80 kilometers along the Inn River in the canton of Graubünden. It is divided into the Upper Engadin, famous for its vast lake plateau including Lakes Sils, Silvaplana, and St. Moritz, and the Lower Engadin, known for its rugged gorges. The region is the heartland of the Romansh language, reflected in the traditional house facades with sgraffito decorations and local customs. St. Moritz, the region's centerpiece, is world-renowned for its luxury and Olympic history. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Engadin features over 580 kilometers of hiking trails and premier mountain biking routes during the summer. In winter, the region transforms into a paradise for skiing and cross-country skiing, with the Engadin Ski Marathon attracting thousands of participants annually. A local culinary must is the Engadin Nut Tart (Nusstorte). The valley is accessible via the Albula or Julier passes, or by the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage route. The best time to visit is summer for hiking or December to March for winter sports.
