Avenches (Switzerland)

Weather…

Avenches, ancient Aventicum, was once the thriving capital of Roman Helvetia with over 20,000 inhabitants. Its most outstanding landmark is the Roman amphitheater, which now serves as a stage for opera festivals and rock concerts. Besides the theater, visitors can explore the Roman Museum housed in a medieval tower above the arena entrance, containing treasures like a golden bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The ancient city walls and the Roman East Gate are further silent witnesses to this glorious past. The town is situated on a hill above the Broye plain, near Lake Murten. Its medieval center features appealing arcades and narrow alleys. Another significant institution is the Swiss National Stud (Haras national), dedicated to the breeding of Freiberger horses. The best time to visit is during the summer months when open-air events take place in the amphitheater. Avenches is easily accessible by train from Payerne or Murten.
